So, with the hymnist Frederick Lehman we sing: "Could we with ink the oceans fill, And were the skies of parchment made, Were every stalk on earth a quill, And every man a scribe by trade, To write the love of God above, Would drain the ocean dry, Nor could the scroll contain the whole, Tho stretched from sky to sky." The grandeur of such a lofty truth cannot be overstated. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we are freed from all condemnation, and assured of God's love. In Romans 8:35, Paul asks the question, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?" His conclusion, recorded in verses 38-39, is both profound and poetic: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Being in Christ by faith removes God's condemnation, and assures us of eternal life in heaven.

Since Christ is free from condemnation before God, so is the sinner who is "in Christ" Not only that, but God has "raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 2:6). Christ is the book, and the sinner saved by grace is the ticket. As long as the ticket is in the book, whatever happens to the book also happens to the ticket. Think of a plane ticket that has been placed in a book for safekeeping. (Romans 1:17) So, in Christ, our sins have been forgiven and there is no condemnation.

As believers, we have received a righteousness from God that is by faith.

To be "in Christ Jesus" means that, for purposes of divine judgment, we do not stand before God alone, but with the righteousness of Christ himself. He ends the chapter assuring those in Christ that there is also no separation from the love of God. The Apostle Paul begins by proclaiming that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans chapter 8 is one of the pinnacles of Christian truth.
